Kathmandu, Sept. 20: Police have arrested three people for their alleged involvement in planting bombs in half a dozen of schools in the capital on Tuesday morning.
“We are carrying out intensive investigation on the suspicious objects planted at various schools and have arrested three suspects so far in connection with the explosions,” Pradhyumna Karki, Superintendent of Police and spokesperson at the Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu said.
The improvised bombs went off at the gates of Aakashdeep Boarding School and Manakamana Higher Secondary School at Dakshinadhoka, Jorpati, said SP Karki. The pressure cooker bombs exploded at these schools at around 3:45 this morning.
No human casualties have been reported in the explosion.
Police have recovered suspicious items and leaflets of the All Nepal National Free Students’ Centre and Young Communist Force Nepal from the incident sites.
Suspicious objects were found at East Pole Academy, Ambeds Academy, Rai School and Bal Sansar School located in the Bouddha area and Radiant School at Sanepa, Lalitpur and Kanchanjanga in Dallu of Kathmandu, setting off alarm and terror among the locals.
Authorities, however, confirmed them to be a hoax.
Pamphlets demanding free education for all children and issued by Young Communist Force and All Nepal National Independent Student Center were found at the sites where the bombs and the suspicious objects were planted.
Similarly, local people were terrified by a hoax that a pressure cooker bomb was planted in front of a school at Sanepa in Lalitpur Sub Metropolitan City-2 this morning.
However, a bomb disposal team from the Nepal Army later found out the object as a hoax when it tried to defuse it, Deputy Superintendent of Police and spokesperson of Lalitpur District Police, Ishwor Karki said.
Meanwhile, National Campaign for Children as a Zone of Peace and Protection (CZOPP) has condemned the implanting bombs at schools. It the statement issued today, the CZOPP has called the private schools to be transparent and the government to take measures to ensure safety of the school children.
Similarly, Chairman of the Private and Boarding School’s Organization, Nepal (PABSON) Laxya Bahadur K.C denounced the incidents and demanded that the government provide security to schools.
The Nepal Army’s bomb disposal team were mobilized to the schools to diffuse it.
