Real Madrid put themselves on the brink of the Champions League last 16, as they demolished Galatasaray 6-0 at home.
Zinedine Zidane’s side now just need a point from their last two group games, against Club Brugge and Paris Saint-Germain. The 2018 winners flew out of the blocks at the Santiago Bernabeu, and into a 3-0 lead inside the first 15 minutes.
Brazilian teenager, Rodrygo, scored his first ever Champions League goal after three minutes, curling home Marcelo’s pass from inside the box. The former Santos man then added a second goal, just three minutes later. Again, it was Marcelo with the assist, as the 18-year old found himself in space to nod the ball home.
Skipper Sergio Ramos made it three on 14 minutes, dinking home a trademark ‘Paneka’ penalty. Ramos’ decision to take the penalty was controversial, as it denied Rodrygo an early hat trick.
There was to be no let up from the hosts, as Karim Benzema slotted home Rodrygo’s pass just before the break.
It was one way traffic again after the break, with Fernando Muslera saving from Benzema and substitute Isco. However, the Turkish side’s resistance was broken again on 81 minutes – as Benzema netted his 50th Champions League goal, tapping home Dani Carvajal’s cross.
And as the game ticked into added time, Rodrygo was not to be denied a historic night, firing home Benzema’s pass for his first ever Champions League hatrick being the youngest after Raul.
