Kathmandu, June 2: Taking part in the post-budget discussions at the Legislature-Parliament meeting Thursday, Nepali Congress lawmaker Pradeep Giri urged the government to make corrections in the budget based on feedback of the main opposition as per the parliamentary practice.
Lawmaker from the same party Gagan Thapa said the budget centered on the distribution would take the country nowhere and claimed that the budget for the upcoming fiscal year has ignored the status of country’s revenue collection, income and expenditure and overall economic condition.
Lawmaker Rajendra Prasad Pandey from the major ruling party defended the charges that the new budget came haphazardly. The budget for the upcoming fiscal year had laid a special focus on the agriculture, who was one of its salient features, he added.
The Terai-Madhes Prosperous Irrigation Programme, Sunkoshi Marine Diversion, construction of postal highway and north-south highway included in the budget would help lead the country towards the path of economic prosperity.
Gangalal Tuladhar from the same party said the government showed its responsibility towards the people with announcing the concept for one village: one doctor programme in the budget. UML’s Yagya Raj Sunuwar praised the budget as he said it was focused on infrastructure development.
Another lawmaker Karna Bahadur BK said although some programmes aimed to conclude the peace process were positive, the new budget failed to pay an attention to the capital expenditure.
CPN (Maoist Center)’s Radhika Tamang demanded appropriate share of the Upper Tamakoshi Hydro Power Project to the families of the martyrs of people’s war and compensation to those left injured and mutilated during the conflict. The budget limited just in paper would do nothing for the people, she said.
NC lawmaker Mahendra Yadav expressed his concern over the exclusion of the name of BP Koirala in the budget.
Anita Devkota accused the government of taking political revenge by not including the names of veteran leaders BP Koirala and Ganeshman Singh in the budget.
Dilli Parasad Kafle, Milan Kumar Rajbanshi, Meena Pun, Seema Kumari BK, Laxman Rajbanshi, Ram Kumar Rai, Yasoda Kumari Lama, Nagendra Kumal, Padma Narayan Chaudhary, Leela Devi Sherstha, Bir Bahadur Balayar, Sushila Nepal, Yogendra Chaudhary, Dulari Harijan, Kamal Prasad Pangeni, Prem Bahadur Ale, Nishakumari Shah, Yogendra Tamang Ghising, Rajendra Kumar KC, Aditya Narayan Kashaudan, Raji Bikram Shahi, Janardan Dhakal, Mamata Giri and Kedar Prasad Sanjel were among those taking part in the Thursday’s post-budget discussions session.
The Legislature-Parliament shall meet again at 11: 00 am tomorrow.
